Remarkable Results: Ask Members for Feedback

Always be listening! It may seem obvious, but not only do you need to ask for member feedback, you also need to respond and follow up on questions, comments and suggestions … which is just as important as (if not more important than) asking for feedback.

  • Survey members via email and/or your website to inquire
  • about their needs
  • Conduct surveys on a regular basis
  • Conduct focus groups – virtual or in person at your meetings
  • Utilize feedback from event evaluations
  • Listen and respond to anecdotal comments

Don’t forget: Sharing feedback is also another great excuse for you to communicate important information to members.

“We conduct a Friday Focus Survey and ask our members
1 to 3 questions on a topic that’s been on our listserv,” says
Karen Krzmarzick from ASOA. “We’ve used these surveys
for benchmarking and have developed a publication for our
members around the results.”

What does it take to keep your audience engaged?

One of the most effective ways to get repeat registrants/purchasers for your virtual events is to create optimal learning environments for every one of your webinars – make sure your audience gets their “money’s worth” every time. With people closely examining how they spend their time and money, it’s vitally important to develop purposeful content that meets your audience’s levels of experience and learning needs.

“Active engagement is critical to learning retention and transfer regardless of the medium,” says Kathleen Edwards, CAE, president of CompassPoints, a consultancy specializing in effective learning environments and strategies. “It’s also key to participant satisfaction. When participants get what they need, they come back for more and recommend your programs to others.”

Create expectations that your speakers will use the interactive software to advantage; coach them on how to use polling and other features. Guide them in understanding how speaking virtually is different from face-to-face. Encourage them to provide engaging handouts with worksheets and checklists.

Finally, recommends Edwards, “To enhance learning, ensure speakers leave participants with specific questions to consider and action steps they can take to immediately begin applying what they’ve learned.”

Carefully monitoring your content and creating a specific user experience for every webinar will create a valuable learning environment and will encourage repeat registrants.

How webinar sponsors can help you and your members

Finding a sponsor for your online educational programs might seem overwhelming or even impossible, especially given the current economic climate and restricted resources you are dealing with. However, if you add up all the potential benefits - for you and your members - of attaining just one sponsor, the value starts to outweigh the time and work you may have to put in up front:

  • With the financial help from sponsors, you can reduce the cost for members to attend your events. (See case study below.)
  • Reduced event rates usually means more members will be able to afford to attend your events = more non-dues revenue.
  • Low-cost, affordable continuing education for your members = happy members.
  • Hold "special" events you may not otherwise be able to.
  • You can even offer 1 to 2 webinars to your members for free each year!

A Few Quick Tips to Get Started

  • Find at least one sponsor for each webinar, audio conference, streaming event and video conference.
  • Ask sponsors from your face-to-face conferences, regional events and annual meetings. You can give them the option of donating as little as $500 or as much as $5,000 or more!
  • Ask business vendors.
  • Ask business partners and others you have established relationships with.

Appreciation Can Really Add Up

Once you have a sponsor, make sure to say thanks and provide plenty of reasons (benefits) to donate again. Here are just a few ways to say "thanks" and increase the WIIFM value of attracting sponsors who want to continue supporting your events:

  • Put sponsor logo on your promotional pieces.
  • Put slide about sponsor in scrolling slides and after title slide in PPT deck.
  • Put sponsor logo on your scrolling slides and webinar materials.
  • Mention sponsor name at beginning of webinar.
  • Thank sponsor at the end of your webinar- either on the air and/or on the final slide of your webinar presentation.
  • Allow a 1-minute introduction from the sponsor before the event is turned over to the speakers.
  • Mention sponsor in Infomercial.

Case Study
With the financial support of a sponsor, one KRM client was able to lower the cost of tuition for their webinars from $199 to $99! This resulted in more webinar registrations and greater member appreciation for the client's training and education programs.

What are the benefits of ‘attendance polling’ during your audio, web, streaming and video events?

  • How many of your customers are taking advantage of the opportunity to “invite as many people as they want” to attend your events … and pay only one price?
  • Would you like to know how many people are attending each of your audio, web, streaming and video events?
  • If you had large groups attending your events, would you reconsider 100 page PowerPoint presentations?
  • How early before events do you send your materials? Do you give enough time to those who have to make copies for groups of 10, 50, 200?

If you are interested in trying attendance polling, it’s as simple as letting us know during your orientation call. It will be captured and a summary will be sent to you following each event. (See example below).

This report will show you how many attendees you have at each site. As you can see below, 99 sites attended the event, but there were actually 556 attending — an average of 5.61 attendees per site.
